Currently Watching; Ruler: Master of the Mask (군주 – 가면의 주인)

Joseon’s king takes an oath and joins Pyunsoo Group. They consist of powerful figures that are after wealth and power. After a crown prince (Yoo Seung Ho) is born the king hides his face in order to protect him from the group. As an adult the crown prince runs away from the palace. He meets Han Ga Eun (Kim So Hyun) and falls in love. Can the two get together while fighting the powerful Pyunsoo Group?

After seeing the mask crown prince Lee Sun wears I immediately thought of my dear Wang So and my expectations rose. I’m still having serious withdrawals from Scarlet Heart… 😦

Oh, Wang So ❤

But I was wrong comparing Ruler to Scarlet Heart. Forgive me for being this blunt but where Scarlet Heart leaves me breathless and makes my heart skip Ruler simply makes me fall asleep. I’ve seen the plot before and the righteous play the main characters are playing is making me yawn.

Besides the plot this drama is different for a whole different reason. Due to China’s ban on Korean entertainment big broadcasting stations are changing their broadcasting style: Ruler consists of 40, 30 minute long episodes. They air two episodes a day so we still get the same dose but just cut into two episodes. Why do this? Because then the broadcasting station’s video on demand (when you watch episodes later online) can charge you for two episodes instead of one… Clever but annoying for a drama watcher.

Anyway all babbling aside here are the characters:

Lee Sun is tired of living while hiding his face. His conscience is tested every time someone sees his face because of the king’s command:

“The only people who know the Prince’s face must be only me, Lady Yi, and you. If anyone else sees his face, kill them.”

He is extremely righteous and wants to be a fair king to his subjects. He tries to be fair to them and thinks of what is best for them. Behind his mask he is handsome but everyone thinks that he is deformed and avoids him in fear of the punishment should they happen to see his face.

When he tastes freedom he doesn’t want to let it go. He finds out about the suffering of his people and decides to fight against the Pyunsoo Group.

While roaming the streets he meets Han Ga Eun and falls for her. Ga Eun is the daughter of a government official and a smart woman. She is a student of a respected teacher and interested in many subjects one of them being Western medicine. She takes care of the people who ask her for help and believes in justice.

Ga Eun’s love rival is the granddaughter of Pyunsoo Group’s leader. Hwa Gun (Yoon So Hee) takes an interest in the Crown Prince after seeing him and tries to become his betrothed.

Dae Mok (Heo Joon Ho) is the leader of Pyunsoo Group. After controlling the king into giving the group control of the country’s water supply the group makes Joseon’s water chargeable. The poor fall in to despair and suffer. Upon seeing this the Crown Prince vows to fight against the group.

Commoner Lee Sun (L from Infinite) has his father taken away by the group and he vows to avenge him. He has a hot temper and he doesn’t shy away from using his fists. Despite his low status he is smart and loves to study.

I don’t usually write a CW article this early in the series but I can’t see myself spending any more time watching this. I feel like I already know everything after seeing the characters and the story doesn’t convince me either. It seems like this is not going to be my new Scarlet Heart…

  1. Are you still watching Ruler? I’ve only gotten up to episode 4, but I’m still interested because I have a feeling its going to be a Prince and the Pauper type show. I have no interest in the love line (I usually don’t which is why I stray from strictly romance shows) but I’m more interested in the whole culture shock aspect of the show.

    1. I finished four episodes but then decided to put Ruler in the back corner. Something about it just didn’t click with me and with so many other dramas starting now I won’t force myself to watch it. With historical dramas I either fall head over heals in love with them or don’t like them at all 😉
