Yoon Na Moo (Jang Ki Yong) is the son of a serial killer Yoon Hee Jae (Heo Joon Ho). His father murders the parents of Na Moo’s first love, Gil Nak Won (Jin Ki Joo). Years later they’re trying to live their lives but Yoon Hee Jae publishes a book about his murders and they all receive the limelight again. Na Moo and Nak Won meet again but will they be able to heal each other?
Come and Hug Me is an amazing drama. Crime and romance are at a great balance, and Yoon Hee Jae’s thoughts and actions are chilling. Beware, a lot of pictures and quotes to come!
Na Moo was a top student. He studied hard and took care of his little sister who he adores while his parents worked. At school he met Gil Nak Won and the two fell in love.
Na Moo’s father, Yoon Hee Jae is a serial killer. He (to some degree) loves his children and takes care of them. He believes he has to make them strong as humans are animals who prey on each other.
Yoon Hee Jae; “Merciless strength is what makes you strong. Sympathy or affection only makes humans weak and pathetic. Those have no value in life.”
He believes that his children will never stab him in the back. But Na Moo is different from him. He may be stoic and quiet, but he is nothing like his father: He turns him in.
Years later Na Moo is in the police academy trying to make amends for his father’s crimes. He now goes by the name Chae Do Jin. He suffered from being his father’s son and people’s looks and pointed fingers when he was younger. Now he lives his life voicing the victims’ point of view and protecting them.
He is calm and nice to even to people who are wrong and judgemental and with his words he is able to make them see a different point of view from their own.
Gil Nak Won’s mother was a famous actress. As a child she had a very outgoing and talkative personality. She fell for Na Moo after seeing him and pulled him from his cold family to her own.
Gil Nak Won; “What ever happens, I will like you forever.”
Now she lives as an aspiring actress and goes by the name Han Jae Yi. She suffers from panic disorder and nightmares due to her past. She is not as outgoing as she was as a child, but she is a survivor.
As Nak Won and Na Moo fall in love, Na Moo’s father becomes convinced that this is a weakness to his son.
Yoon Hee Jae; “If you can’t get rid of it, Father will get rid of it for you. Every useless thing that puts my son in any kind of danger. Nothing can exist for humans to be strong. So get rid of it. Get rid off all obstacles. Father will protect you from everything that makes you weak and pathetic.”
This seals the fate of Nak Won’s parents. On the fateful night they lost their lives Na Moo saved Nak Won’s life. He realised that he becomes strong when he wants to protect something, and Nak Won is the person he wants to protect.
Chae Do Jin; “I’ll become strong. Things that father mentioned, everything that makes me weak and pathetic, I’ll protect them. My beautiful Nak Won.”
I really enjoy Come and Hug Me. The story behind its characters is tragic yet the actors and their amazing performances (from the past younger and current older actors) are excellent. They depict their characters with very small details but those bring the characters alive.
I find Jang Ki Yong and Nam Da Reum’s (younger Na Moo) acting especially eye-catching. Their eyes, words, tone, actions, everything are very in sync. They could very well be the same person. Plus, both of them have a dreamy, deep voice I love.
I have a weakness for stories like this. Psychopaths, thoughts about human nature, surviving, love, great acting and everything in between. Come and Hug Me seems to be a perfect package.
