The Best, Meh, and Worst Dramas from 2018!

Year after year I think the number of dramas I finish is less and less. In this post from last year I said that I may have dropped more dramas than I have completed. This year the amount of dramas that had me crazy in love was just a few, even less than last year! Still I love to reminisce the past year so here I am with my list of dramas for this year, and like last year I added a movie highlights too.

My Favorite Dramas

Just Between Lovers (그냥 사랑하는 사이)

This drama was worth every single second. It was not a light watch but the love and story was amazing. “The heartbreak and life after a tragedy are palpable. Jun Ho and Won Jin Ah are great in their roles. The drama works its watcher: you get attached and can’t help supporting the characters in the lives they live now.” Life is sometimes hard but you just have to tough your way through it.

“I’m in the middle of getting used to my misery again.” -Kang Doo

Come and Hug Me (이리와 안아줘)

This drama had me completely captured. The relationship between Na Moo and his father, between him and Nak Won, and simply just how he thought of himself. Psychopaths and hard subjects are always delicious and so was this. Come and Hug Me was one of the best dramas of this year without a doubt.

“If you can’t get rid of it, Father will get rid of it for you.” -Yoon Hee Jae

Player (플레이어)

Greaet action and even the revenge theme was made subtly. The best part of this drama was the relationship and chemistry between the main cast. The team work and amazing ending make this a great drama to watch.

Other Good Dramas

Queen of Mystery 2 (추리의 여왕2)

Mixed feelings. I loved the first part and I loved this part too, yet I feel that the story is not complete: It needs a third season where our main couple finally gets together. Love the banter and crimes, but the chemistry between Kwon Sang Woo and Choi Kang Hee is the salt of this drama. So highly recommended but enjoyed at best when watched after the first season.

The Beauty Inside (뷰티 인사이드)

Firstly Lee Min Ki can’t go wrong. I loved the story yet somehow in the end my excitement decreased with some useless plot twists. Overall a great romantic comedy.

Mr. Sunshine (미스터 션샤인)

Mr. Sunshine was a pretty decent sageuk. Loved the time period and history included into the story yet the ending was not perfect. Some things I would’ve changed but all in all pretty good. Gu Dong Mae stole my heart, so second lead syndrome warning here. Still, I wrote a lot about Mr. Sunshine with my History Bits series for Mr. Sunshine.

What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim? (김비서가 왜 그럴까)

What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim? was a basic, sweet rom com. Enjoyable to watch and no useless twist and turns. Thumbs up.

Good Start, yet…

Like always there are dramas that you start, get excited and then the story flops.

These three are good examples. My Mister had a great idea yet the story was lacking something: a climax point to the story if you will. Something In the Rain/Pretty Noona Who Nuys Me Food suffered from a terrible forceful last minute break up – let’s get back together ending, and Terius Behind Me reminded me of why I stopped watching American tv shows: horrible, unbelievable plot ideas. All dramas had a good idea yet somewhere on the way someone dropped the ball.

Feel Good to Die

Movie Highlights

Last year was a great year for movies. This year few stand out from the ones I’ve seen:

The Negotiation (협상)

A great film and Hyun Bin in the role of his career.

The Witness (목격자)

What would you do if you saw a murder happen? Become a witness or close your eyes?

Of course Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days was also released, and it deserves to be watched too. The story continues and the past is explained.

Now I think I may have babbled on for too long already. As always, let’s hope that 2019 will be a great drama year!

Happy New Year to everyone!

  1. Great list! It’s same with me too, the no. of kdramas I am watching are getting lesser and dropped dramas are increasing or are same or more as watched dramas. Always getting into drama slump and fearing to start new kdramas because I think I might drop it or not like it in second half. I have most of these dramas in my dropped list too. I was overall happy with My Mister but just the last episode and they way they wrapped it could have been BETTER and Terius behind me too (after 10 episodes.) Feel good to die started out so good and then got so boring, dropped it too. Loved Just between lovers and Come and hug me.
