It’s the year 1997 in Busan. Sung Shi Won (Jung Eun Ji) is in high school. She is a passionate fangirl of H.O.T., the biggest boy group there is. In 2012, her high school class is having a reunion, and one couple in the group of friends will announce that they’re getting married. Who is it and how did they get together in 1997?

Sung Shi Won is at the bottom of her class but she doesn’t mind because she has her oppas. She lives for her H.O.T. oppas despite her father’s objections.

Yoon Yoon Jae (Seo In Guk) has been one of her best friends ever since childhood. The two have always been together and there’s nothing they don’t know about each other.

Unlike Sung Shi Won, Yoon Yoon Jae is the top student in the whole school. He is handsome, smart and polite. There isn’t a student who doesn’t like him. Unfortunately for him, he has only eyes for one girl who doesn’t realize his feelings.

The group of friends also includes Kang Jun Hee (Hoya), Bang Sung Jae (Lee Shi Eon), Do Hak Chan (Eun Ji Won) and Mo Yoo Jung (Shin So Yool).

Kang Jun Hee is a good friend to Yoon Yoon Jae. The two are the top students in school. Bang Sung Jae is the talker of the group. He is rarely quiet and loves to go after girls.

Do Hak Chan is the new transfer student to school. He quickly becomes a part of the group of friends. He is the porn king of school, yet he has a hard time talking or looking at real women.

Mo Yoo Jung is just as much of a fan girl as her best friend Sung Shi Won. Together they chase and travel after their oppas.

Who in this group of friends will end up together and will announce their marriage in 2012?

Reply 1997 is a treasure. It have been planning to watch it for years yet I only got to it now. The characters and their chemistry together is absolutely amazing. Yet, what really sets this drama apart is its inclusion of history and fangirling so smoothly into its storyline.

Firstly, I have to mention that unlike Sung Shi Won, I belong to team Sechskies, not H.O.T.. Still the fangirling and the intense rivalry that took place between these groups and the actual fighting between the fans are included in this drama perfectly.

I think it was a brilliant move to include Eun Ji Won in the cast in this drama. As a leader of Sechskies, his innocent wondering and amazement at the girls’ fangirling is hilarious to watch.

The entire cast and story make Reply 1997 an amazing drama. It’s light hearted and sweet, yet so interesting. The inclusion of different fandoms and the romance’s mystery make this a fantastic drama. I suspect that in the end Sung Shi Won will end up with Yoon Yoon Jae, but I don’t know. And to be honest, it doesn’t matter. Reply 1997 and this group of friends are so entertaining and funny otherwise, that I just love watching this show despite the mystery romance.
